Safe to use thickener and binder for agriculture seed coatings, fertilizers, and pesticides

Dow cellulosic and poly(ethylene oxide) products can be used in a variety of agricultural applications. For example, seed coatings are frequently used to increase yield in row crops. ETHOCEL™ ethylcellulose polymers are highly insoluble in water; therefore, they can be used as a binder and film-former for water-insoluble coatings. Such coatings have application in the controlled release of active ingredients to aid germination. METHOCEL™ cellulose ethers are versatile, water-soluble methylcellulose and hydroxypropyl methylcellulose polymers. These are used as an adhesion aid or “sticker” for seed coatings. They act as a binder in granulation and can help compatibilize liquid solutions, emulsions and suspensions.

Our Solutions

Water soluble thickeners are frequently used in spray pesticides and fertilizers to help control drift or delay evaporation. Some pesticides or fertilizers can only effectively treat so long as they remain hydrated on the plant. Additionally, POLYOX™ Water-Soluble Resins help reduce spatter and mist formation of aqueous formulations. This property can make it easier to apply insecticide, pesticide and herbicides by spraying without fogging or drift to adjacent areas. ETHOCEL™ dissolves in a wide range of solvents such as aromatic hydrocarbons, natural oils and others. They make ideal thickeners for non-aqueous formulations. 

Water soluble packaging or pods are becoming increasingly popular delivery systems for insecticides, pesticides, and herbicides. Such packaging provides the end-user with a premeasured quantity of the product to be applied, prevents direct contact with the substance, and minimizes measurement error. POLYOX™ combines high water-solubility with thermo-plasticity making POLYOX™ useful to manufacture this type water-soluble packaging. The resultant film has heat-sealing characteristics with strong closures being formed at 135 – 165 °F (57 – 74 °C).
