Polymers that can significantly improve flocculation and particle retention performance

In paper manufacturing a broad range of colloidal particles, including fillers, pigments and sizing agents, are added into relatively low solids aqueous suspensions of pulp fibers. It is important that chemical additives, fillers and fibers are retained on the paper machine web during the dewatering process. However, these colloidal particles are often too small to retain on the web during the paper formation. To aid retention, various high molecular weight water-soluble polymers are being applied as flocculants. Poly(ethylene oxide) is an effective retention aid, especially for those pulps which contain anionic electrolytes that interfere with common cationic flocculants.

POLYOX™ Water-Soluble Polymers are non-charged polymers used in paper applications because of their high affinity for mechanical pulps, fillers and pitch. Their use in filler retention applications has become increasingly important due to the demand for high-opacity, lighter-weight paper and the growing cost of pulps.

POLYOX™ is effective as a retention aid in newsprint and corrugated media to flocculate the fines, fibers, and fillers into the pulp and prevent them from being drained away with the water.

POLYOX™ is used in the treatment of effluent as it improves the removal of lignin from process water. When added to the filtrate, it forms complexes via hydrogen bonding and yields a sludge that is easily extracted by floatation or screening.

POLYOX™ serves as an outstanding formation aid in tissue-making processes where it acts as a thickener and is used to disperse the fibers evenly. As a tissue paper “formation aid” and dispersant POLYOX™ helps improve softness and runability.
