Chemistry
Hydroxypropyl methylcellulose (HPMC) grades are plant-based polymers that have had hydroxyl groups on the cellulose chain substituted for methoxy or hydroxypropyl groups. This substitution makes polymer—known as a cellulose ether—soluble in water and some organic solvents. HPMC is a highly versatile ingredient used as a thickener, binder, stabilizing agent, and film former in several different applications. It also possesses water retention capabilities and helps impart lubricity in solutions. HPMC is a safe, nontoxic ingredient used in many different applications such as agrochemicals, coatings, ceramics, cleaners, adhesives, and inks. The rheology-modifying properties help build viscosity to tight specifications in coatings, cleaners, adhesives, and inks, and they help reduce dripping and sagging upon application. As HPMC forms a three-dimensional network in solutions, it also helps provide stabilization for suspensions and emulsions in the applications mentioned previously. Aqueous solutions of HPMC will also reversibly gel when exposed to heat, allowing for a controllable boost in the green strength of green ceramic bodies. HPMC is commercially sold as METHOCEL™, available in food- and non-food-grade options. For information and options on the closely related methylcellulose chemistry, click here.
