Our Solutions

Methylcellulose (MC) is a cellulose ether that contains methoxy groups that have been substituted on the cellulose backbone. The methoxy group substitution makes MC soluble in water and provides a relatively low thermal gelation temperature. These plant-based polymers are relatively safe and nontoxic and are highly effective thickeners, binders, and film formers for a variety of applications. Methylcellulose is used as a thickener and stabilizing agent in liquid adhesive, coating, and ink formulations, where it builds viscosity and improves workability of these formulations by reducing dripping and sagging. In ceramic extrusion applications, the low thermal gelation property mentioned previously helps increase green strength and reduce defects prior to firing. In agrochemical applications, low–molecular weight grades of METHOCEL™ help prevent crystallization of active ingredients during formulation storage. Methylcellulose is sold under the METHOCEL™ line of products. For information and options on the closely related hydroxypropyl methylcellulose (HPMC) chemistry, click here.
