SeaSpen® GP379, an industrial grade of carrageenan, is primarily used in a variety of water-based formulations as a gelling agent. This hydrocolloid is fully biodegradable and is naturally derived from seaweed.
SeaSpen® GP379 is an iota-carrageenan polymer derived from seaweed from sustainable Euchema spinosum farms. SeaSpen® GP379 an ideal gelling agent that can be used to develop gel-based industrial formulations, such air fresheners and insect baits. Solutions with SeaSpen® GP379 are made by mixing it with other dry ingredients in a formulation with a source of calcium. After slowly dispersing the dry mixture in rapidly agitated cold water, the dispersion should be heated above its solubility temperature (~80°C). A weak gel can then be produced by cooling.
SeaSpen® GP379 solutions have the characteristics of being resistant to freeze-thaw degradation and syneresis, increasing the durability of gelled products even in harsh weather conditions. Being fully biodegradable, SeaSpen® GP379 is an ideal alternative to replace gelling additives typically derived from nonrenewable resources such as fossil fuels.
